Our Farm:
Before the idea of Fern Hollow Farm was conceived, Black Angus
cattle roamed the forty acres of rolling hills and winding creek
beds decorating the pastures surrounding Pat’s homestead. In 1999,
Pat and Holly McShane married and together with their two children,
fully enjoyed the serenity of the farm atmosphere. Soon after, a
colleague of Holly’s suggested she invest in a nanny goat with a
kid, for each of the children, Patrick and Kelsey. Having never
owned a goat before, those scrub goats looked adorable. A few days
later, Pat informed Holly that he wanted to get into Boer Goats.
Misunderstanding what he said, Holly said “You’re already bored with
the goats? We just got ‘em!”
After much research and farm planning, the McShane’s first Boer
Goats soon made themselves at home alongside Pat’s cattle. Fern
Hollow Farm was idealized as years of research, hands on experience,
and lots of mistakes led the way to their current herd of over three
hundred goats that expanded the landscape to over 58 acres, three
barns and a new son, named Kendall.
The focus of their breeding program has always been to exceed breed
standards by using the best genetics available, through flushes and
natural breeding. Recently, the McShane’s made “The Color
Connection” as they strive to breed the hardiest, most sound and
aesthetically pleasing goats combined with splashes of color,
paints, solid reds, and of course, the famous Polka Dots! Welcome to
Fern Hollow Farm!
